Have you ever fallen in the trap of self-fulfilling prophecies? In other words, have you ever experienced the sensation of embarking on a new plan with that gut feeling that succeeding will/shall be somehow hard and that, most likely, you will end up missing it? Or that, eventually, you will make it, but at some price for instance without enjoying the process or the journey?

This happens quite often and, actually, looks like a paradox. You want to succeed in doing something, so, you plan for it and take actions consequently. You think “I am in, I am committed”, nevertheless those gut feelings like “it is going to be hard”, “I am going to try, but most likely eventually I won’t get it” or “I give it a try and I will see how it goes” and “until it lasts” – are still there. Oh boy, you have no idea how many times in the past years I used these sentences and, particularly, those three words “until it lasts”. The funny thing is that, at that point, while my conscious mind was recognizing the recurring and self-sabotaging pattern (leading to auto fulfilling prophecy), at a more profound, utterly unaware, level everything was already set up for my failure. At that subconscious level I had already made my decision: “it will not last. Period”.

It is normal to stumble upon similar mechanisms. If we don’t know how our mind works and how to reprogram our inner beliefs pattern, this is what is most likely to happen. We run our lives in an autopilot mode we have no control on.

But why does this happen so frequently and to so many people? It is because every time we experience a failure, or something doesn’t happen the way we wanted it to be, this situation triggers an emotional feeling that in our brain strengthens the neural pathway related to failure and dissatisfaction. This association becomes, over time, stronger and stronger (as well as very active) and prevents us from thinking differently. Not because we don’t want it, but because it is easier for the brain to run its electrical energy along this pattern rather than going for another one. It is as simple as that. More energy flows where the resistance is lower. This way, unknowingly, we self-sabotage our results by damaging our neural pattern to success rather than making it work for us.

Something similar happens with dieting. Most people do damage their metabolism instead of making it work for themselves. Did you know that as many as two-thirds of weight-loss dieters end up heavier and less healthy than when they started? Even worse, when they lose weight, they lose muscle and fat. When they regain weight, they gain back all fat. And since muscle burns more calories than fat, their metabolism is now slower than when they started the diet. Again, it is as simple as that. Nevertheless, if you are not aware of this simple mechanism, chances that you are able to use it for boosting your results are slim.
