Becoming aware of our subconscious self-sabotage patterns it’s a life changer. Many of us are used to believing that we know what we think. But unfortunately, this is not always the case. In fact, only something like 5-10% of our thoughts are conscious whereas the rest ~95-90% operates at a subconscious level. This means that what people think they are and what they believe they can or they can’t do, is mainly due to their subconscious mind speaking up! This is also the reason why, often, what we are aware of thinking is not necessarily what we express with our daily behaviors.
Having said that, I also want you to know some interesting facts about the subconscious mind:
- It is always vigilant and alert, regardless of your conscious state of mind (e.g. it listens even when you are sleeping in front of the television),
- It speaks to you using mental images and symbols, often in dreams, as it has no verbal language,
- It is not time bound; it recognizes only the here and the now,
- It has the cognitive level of a child (2 to 8 years old),
- It doesn’t differentiate between positive and negative words and it takes everything literally as it has no sense of humour (such a shame!). Since it speaks through images, to negate something, it has to figure out the very thing you are trying to deny; for instance, if I told you “don’t think of an elephant…” what are you thinking about right now? [rif.George Lakoff, Berkeley University]
- Its main purpose is to protect you and keep you safe (so called survival mode), no matters if that does not improve your current situation nor give you either happiness or fulfilment.
So, how to deal with that? Well, first of all by stopping underestimating the power of what we don’t know/are not aware of about ourselves. And secondly by avoiding trusting only what we can “see” and understand, neglecting the power and influence of our subconscious. It may seem a kind of superfluous advice, but, in itself, is very powerful as it implies a radical switch in mindset towards a more open flexible mind. This way, in time, it will become second nature to you to pay attention to “subtle” clues, neglected before, and recognize recurring patterns in your daily experience. This is also called self-awareness, and far from being trivial is ultimately what can lead you towards significant and long-lasting changes.
